Dental implants are biocompatible titanium posts that replace the root of a missing tooth. They’re implanted right into your jaw where they fuse over the coming weeks and months. The time it takes for an implant to fuse varies. When you’re ready, we add a tooth replacement, like a crown, on top of the post. Unlike other tooth replacements, implants preserve your bone density! They are the closest imitation of a real tooth. What’s the process like? What should you expect during recovery?

Getting Dental Implants

Before you get implants, our team will examine your mouth to make sure you qualify. Factors like your oral health and jawbone density determine if you’re a good candidate. If implants are a good fit, we’ll design a treatment and get started! Tooth replacement options include crowns, an implant-supported bridge, or implant-supported dentures.

Post-Op Recovery Tips

Getting a dental implant is a surgical procedure, so there’s recovery time. Some bleeding is expected for a few hours after surgery, so use gauze. Take it easy for at least the next 48 hours. You might experience some swelling for about a week, so use ice packs for 20 minutes at a time. To address any pain, we’ll recommend over-the-counter medications. If we’ve given you antibiotics, take them as directed.

What about eating? Right after surgery, we recommend avoiding hot liquid or food. Stick to soft foods like applesauce, pudding, and jello. Once the numbness has worn off, you can eat more solid food, but chew away from the treatment area. Continue with your oral hygiene routines using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Keeping your mouth clean is the best way to avoid infection.
