An emergency dentist can help you when you need immediate care. They will provide you with prompt attention and fix the dental issue. Let’s go over when you need an emergency dentist and what to do in that situation.

What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

Dental emergencies need immediate treatment. Ignoring the problem will only cause further problems down the line. Some common dental emergencies include:

  • Knocked out tooth
  • Cracked or broken tooth
  • Severe toothache
  • Broken or missing crown
  • Broken or missing filling

Should You Go to the Emergency Room or See an Emergency Dentist?

If you experienced physical trauma in other parts of your body besides the mouth area, you should head to the emergency room to receive treatment. If your emergency is only related to the tooth or gums, you can visit the dentist. Dentists will have the tools, technology, and expertise to treat dental-related problems.

What to Do in Case of a Dental Emergency?

Regardless of if you go directly to the emergency room or head to an emergency dentist, there are some things you can do to help the situation.

In case of a knocked-out tooth:

Put an ice pack on your mouth to help with any pain or swelling. If you can, find the knocked-out tooth. It’s actually possible for dentists to reattach the tooth. Put the tooth back in the socket or put it in a glass of milk to keep the tooth alive.

In Case of a Broken or Missing Crown or Filling:

Just like a knocked-out tooth, try to find the missing crown because it’s possible to reinsert back into your mouth. You may not feel pain from this injury, but you still need to see a dentist as soon as possible. An exposed tooth can let in harmful bacteria and create additional problems.

In Case of a Severe Toothache:

Multiple issues can cause severe toothaches, so you must see a dentist right away. A dentist can diagnose the cause and give you proper treatment. Getting treatment as soon as possible can prevent severe infections from occurring and save you from completely losing your tooth.
