Many dental fads exist — and one of the most popular is charcoal for teeth whitening. Once an unknown ingredient, charcoal is popping up in whitening products, including toothpaste, more and more these days, with many touting its natural whitening benefits.

But does charcoal toothpaste really work? Read on before you buy charcoal toothpaste, and learn more about safe, effective teeth whitening options we offer at Edgewater Dental Arts.

What Is Charcoal?

Activated charcoal is a natural ingredient made of carbon that binds to other substances in order to purge them. It’s a potent product; it’s used in emergency situations when dealing with toxins or drug overdoses.

Non-activated charcoal is poisonous. If you are ever buying a product with charcoal, make sure it’s the activated kind!

How Does Charcoal Whiten Teeth?

There are two types of stains: surface stains, which sit on the enamel, or outer layer of the teeth, and intrinsic stains, which are under the tooth surface. Because of its abrasiveness, charcoal is somewhat effective in removing surface stains. But not without a cost: consistent abrasion can be damaging to enamel over time, which actually makes it even more vulnerable to staining!

Charcoal does not penetrate deep into the tooth to remove intrinsic stains, so if you have deeply stained teeth from trauma, weakened enamel, or excessive use of fluoride, to name a few, you won’t have much luck brightening your teeth with charcoal.
