Are Tongue Scrapers Useful?

Bad breath doesn’t always originate from your teeth. In fact, your tongue is most likely the culprit! Throughout the day, sulphur-producing bacteria thrive on your tongue, causing bad breath over time.

Brushing your tongue is one of the easiest ways to reduce the amount of odor-causing bacteria on your tongue, but it may not be the most effective solution. In this blog post, we’ll explore tongue scraping, an alternative to brushing your tongue that can help curb bad breath and improve your overall health.

What Is Tongue Scraping?

Although tongue scraping has existed for hundreds of years, it hasn’t quite caught on as a common part of people’s oral health care routines. A tongue scraper is a u-shaped instrument, usually made of copper, that you drag from the back of your tongue to the tip to scrape off bacteria coating your tongue.

It’s recommended that you tongue scrape after you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed, either before or after you brush your teeth.

How to Scrape Your Tongue

Follow these steps to properly scrape your tongue:

  • Stick your tongue out of your mouth completely.
  • Gently drag the scraper from the back to the tip of your tongue. Never go in the opposite direction.
  • Repeat 1-2 times as necessary until you feel you’ve removed the coating on your tongue.
  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly.
  • Wash your tongue scraper with soap and water and leave to air dry.

Benefits of Tongue Scraping

Tongue scraping is often seen as more effective than brushing your tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush, can improve the appearance of your tongue, and help combat gum disease and other ailments that can damage your overall health. However, tongue scraping alone will not cure or completely combat bad breath; making sure you avoid tobacco products, maintain a proper brushing and flossing routine, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding acidic and sugary foods and beverages are all ways to curb bad breath. Of course, scheduling regular dental cleanings and examinations are another great way to make sure your oral health is in good shape!
