Say you’re currently dealing with a dental infection. Your brain might jump to the worst conclusion, and you might immediately start worrying about whether or not you need to get your tooth extracted. We’ve all been there where we let our thoughts spiral out of control, especially when it comes to our health, but before you stress yourself out take a deep breath. Just because your tooth is infected doesn’t necessarily mean you need to get it removed. Here’s what you need to know:

Possibility of a Root Canal

Good dentists won’t just immediately jump to extracting a tooth if there’s a sign of infection. We’d always prefer our patients keep their natural teeth whenever possible. Depending on the severity of infection, it’s possible that root canal treatment may solve the issue.

During a root canal, we go into the tooth, remove any infected material, and seal the tooth so it’s protected from future infection. We also place a dental restoration like a crown on top to restore the strength and appearance of your tooth.

When Are Extractions Necessary

A tooth extraction might be necessary if the infection is too severe and the tooth is too damaged to be fixed with a root canal. In these cases, removing a tooth effectively stops the spread of infection so that your health is not compromised further.

Consult a Dentist

At the end of the day, no matter how much online research or inspecting of your teeth you do, you’ll need to see a dental professional to determine the best course of action. With their expertise, technology, and tools, they’ll be able to pinpoint exactly what’s going on and what’s the right solution based on your specific needs.
